Chapter 532: Averon’s Hidden Playground
Chapter 532: Averon’s Hidden Playground
"Edmund!" Primrose called out the moment she saw him step out of the palace. She quickly waved him over. "Aster found something strange. I think we should check it out."
"The window?" Edmund asked, probably he had already heard everything through her ring. "I was about to go there, but since I already came down, I wanted to see you first."
Primrose bit her lower lip, trying to hide the smile that threatened to show. Beside them, Aster stood there awkwardly, watching the two of them openly show affection like she didn’t exist.
"Why don’t we check on it together instead?" Primrose said, walking up to him and slipping her arm around his. "I already made sure all the women have warm blankets and hot chocolate. Solene and Aster can stay here and watch over them."
She turned toward Aster before Edmund could say anything. "You can handle that, right?"
Aster blinked a few times, then nodded quickly. "Yes, yes, of course. Don’t worry about that."
Primrose looked back at Edmund with a small smile. "See? They’ll be fine. Let’s go check that hidden room."
She pulled his hand and walked back into the palace. The human soldiers who saw the mighty Lycan King being dragged by his wife could only stare in confusion. After all, there was no way Primrose could drag him if Edmund himself wasn’t willing to follow her.
"But, my wife, wouldn’t it be better if I checked it myself?" Edmund said. "You can see it through the ring instead."
Without stopping, Primrose asked, "Why? You don’t like my company?"
"No, that’s not it!" Edmund said quickly. "I’m just worried there might be something dangerous inside. That’s why, it’s better if you don’t get too close."
Primrose turned back and smiled at him. "But at least, if someone is hiding inside, I’ll know."
Just like Edmund was worried about her, she was also worried about her husband getting hurt. At least, if someone was hiding there with a weapon, Primrose would be able to hear their thoughts.
"It’s alright. If I don’t hear anything, then you can open the door while I wait outside," Primrose continued. "I’m not suicidal, you know."
After all, she was going to become a mother, so there was no way she would risk her life by being reckless about something she didn’t understand.
Edmund sighed, then nodded. "Alright, then. Just let me check it first before you come closer to the door."
Primrose only nodded with a smile and had no intention of doing anything that would make her husband’s heart jump out of his chest.
When they reached the third floor, Edmund leaned slightly to look through another window, trying to figure out where the hidden room might be. It wasn’t in the west wing, but in the main building. With so many windows in the palace, it was easy for something like that to go unnoticed.
"Most of the time, we only clean the outside of the windows," the palace maid explained softly. She was new, so she had never stepped into the west wing. That was why Primrose allowed her to follow them.
"That’s strange," Primrose said. "Didn’t Averon ask you to clean all the rooms regularly?"
The maid slowly shook her head. "He rarely asked us to do that, Your Majesty." She added, "Maybe it’s because there are some rooms we’re not allowed to enter, so we only clean the ones that are frequently used."
Primrose tapped her chin lightly, recalling that the rooms she had seen earlier in the corridor—not in the west wing—were tightly locked, but it was possible they were opened at certain times.
"Didn’t you find anything strange when you checked all those rooms?" Primrose asked Edmund.
"Nothing in particular," he replied. "Most of them were just simple bedrooms." He paused, then looked at her seriously. "But I did find a secret passage leading to the west wing from those rooms."
Primrose gritted her teeth and clicked her tongue silently as she realized that all those locked rooms were likely used as a playground for Averon’s guests.
"Have you ever cleaned those rooms?" Primrose asked the new maid.
The maid shook her head again. "No, Your Majesty. Only certain people are allowed to clean the locked rooms."
Primrose let out a soft sigh. "I see."
A moment later, Edmund spoke again. "I think I know where the hidden window is."
He stepped away from the window and gently guided Primrose toward another room, one that likely held the hidden space.
"You can wait outside, thank you," Primrose said to the new maid.
The maid didn’t want to interfere with royalties matters, so she immediately nodded and stepped out of the room.
Once they were alone, Primrose turned back to Edmund. "So... where do you think it is?"
The room they stood in was a small library, likely used for private reading. Shelves lined the walls, filled with neatly arranged books, but something about the place felt a little too quiet.
"Do you hear anything?" Edmund asked softly. "Someone’s thoughts, maybe?"
She paused for a moment, trying her best to focus her ability on the thoughts of anyone in the room. But aside from Edmund’s, she heard nothing else.
"Nothing," she said quietly. "Maybe the hidden room isn’t meant for hiding people."
She wasn’t even sure if what was inside was important, or just a room that had been forgotten for years.
"Wait, here," Edmund said. He began walking around the library, tapping lightly against the walls as he moved, checking every inch with careful attention.
Meanwhile, Primrose sat down on the couch. She let out a soft breath of relief and stretched her legs, finally relaxing after standing for so long.
Her gaze drifted around the small library, taking in the quiet space. The faint smell of old books filled the air, and aside from the soft tapping sounds Edmund made as he checked the walls, everything felt almost too still.
"Are you alright?" Edmund paused when he noticed his wife looked a bit tired. "I’m sorry. You must be lacking sleep since yesterday."
Primrose chuckled. "Yes, I didn’t get enough sleep, but why are you apologizing?" she added. "It’s not even your fault."
